Chair of State of Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners

President of Oregon Association of Tax Consultants

I have been serving on the State of Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners for almost seven years. Serving on the State Tax Board is an appointed state position. Governor Kate Brown appointed me. It has been a great experience to see our Oregon Tax laws from the inside. It has been a great learning experience, one I could not have had anywhere else. I am also the state President of the Oregon Association of Tax Consultants (OATC).

Tax Experience

I started doing taxes in 1966 – in California right after I graduated from High School. I worked for “Tax Corporation of America,” Rather than working out of an office, I was sent to client’s homes where I did their tax returns at their kitchen tables. No computer, no calculator, just a pencil and tablet to do the math on and a pen to fill out the return. Things were a bit different then. I also prepared taxes for H&R Block in California.

Jump ahead 30 years…. I moved to Oregon and acquired my Oregon Tax preparers’ license. I went to work for H&R Block in Corvallis for the next four years. I got my consultant’s license in 2006 when I opened a Liberty Tax franchise in Albany, where I had anywhere from 4 to 12 employees, depending on the time of year. After nine years, I sold the franchise and opened up Jo Anne Vetter Tax Service, again in Albany, where I have been since 2014.

Education

I graduated Magna cum Laude from the University of San Francisco; I majored in Organizational Behavior with a minor in Telecommunications.

Family

I live in Halsey, Oregon, with my husband, Chuck. Chuck was a manager at Sears in Albany for 30 years. After he retired from Sears, he went to work for Jerry’s Home Improvement in Eugene and was a manager there for 17 years. He is now really retired and is a full-time grandpa to our grandson Christopher.

My daughter Alison, who also has her tax preparer’s license, lives in Brownsville with her husband Jason and their son Christopher. Jason drives a city bus in Albany. Christopher, now 10, goes to school at East Linn Christian School in Lebanon. We live 9 miles from them, so we see each other quite often. Chuck is Christopher’s caregiver after school until either mom or dad gets home from work.

Alison works for me part-time at the tax office doing taxes. Chuck and Christopher also work for me part-time. Chuck is the janitor, runs errands, and does the banking. Christopher helps Grandpa with some of the janitor chores, and he runs the vacuum cleaner and is very good at dusting. Jason is “on-call for heavy lifting and is responsible for organizing my enormous supply of printer paper so I can use the older cartons up first.

We are indeed a family business.
